Astrology has been around for centuries now and because of this you can find its influence in the culture of today’s society. Some of these influences are so deeply rooted that many do not even know that they are being somewhat influenced by astrology. This is why understanding the roots of astrology will not help someone to better grasp their destiny, but also help them understand the world around them.

Three Major Areas Influenced by Astrology

Psychology: Every single that culture that has formed since the beginning of time  have had their actions predominately led by their belief in some sort of mythology. These mythologies have helped to greatly influence all different kinds of astrology. For example; western astrology is intertwined a great deal with ancient Greek mythology. Ancient Greek society is well known to be one of the biggest  influences of modern western culture. Modern day thinker and psychologists like Carl Jung suggest that there is a deep connection between psychology and astrology. This is what Jung had to say when asked about astrology: “As we all know, science began with the stars, and mankind discovered in them the dominants of the unconscious, the ‘gods’, as well as the curious psychological qualities of the zodiac: a complete projected theory of human character. Astrology is a primordial experience similar to alchemy”. Those are very strong words coming from a highly intelligent individual, and because of that I think these words should carry with them a certain amount of weight. While many people wish to just dismiss astrology as “not real”, there is a very real connection between astrology and the way the human mind works.

Cultural Influences of Astrology - Hieroglyphics

Vocabulary and Language: Here is a quick fact I bet a lot of people do not know, many of the oldest examples of written text (think cave drawings, ancient scrolls, etc.) were written all about astrology. This is why astrology has had a major influence when language fully developed in the early roman times. Latin is one of the earliest recorded spoken and written languages and there are numerous of examples of our language being influenced by Latin, and that Latin being influenced by astrology. Take the word influenza for example, this is our word used to describe the flu.  In medieval times the latin translation of this word was “to influence”. Doctors began using it to describe the flu because at that time they believed that the flu was caused by the influence and alignment of the planets and the stars. Another word we hear everyday is disaster. The word “disaster” comes from the Medieval Latin term dis-aster, which mean ”unfavorable star” or “bad star”. The word desire comes from the Latin desiderare, meaning to “long for, wish for,”. It is widely believed that this term gained this meaning because of the term de sidere which translates to “from the stars,” from sidus or sideris meaning “heavenly body, star, constellation”. there numerous more example just like this all over not only our language, but most of the languages that are spoken today.

Literature: More than anything else, astrology has influenced the great literature of our time. There is a very clear path between astrology and great writers such as; Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and more recently J.K. Rowling. All of these literary greats have helped to influence society in more ways than can even be counted, and each and every one of them were heavily influenced by astrology in their writings, which include; “The Divine Comedy”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Canterbury Tales”, “A Midsummer’s Night Dream”, “The Chronicles of Narnia”, “The Harry Potter series”, and much much more. There is a reason why you study and learn about these authors during most of your time in school, and astrology has a lot to do with with how they themselves thought and reasoned. So by transitive property, astrology has helped influence every single person and thing that they have helped influenced. That, my friends, is quite a lot.

Astrology Influences More Than You’d Think

Astrology has influences and roots in many more things, such as music, liberal arts, and entertainment. However, you see the biggest influences in today’s society come from Psychology. Language, and Literature. The history of these 3 things is dominated by astrology, and it helps to know that such highly respected people took astrology so seriously. Maybe that is a hint to the rest of us that we should too!
